India says fresh firing at Kashmir ceasefire line

JAMMU, India - Several mortar bombs were fired from Pakistani territory into India's part of Kashmir on Thursday, the Indian military said, two days after accusing Pakistan of violating a regional ceasefire.

No one was hurt by the mortar and machine gun rounds fired into the Poonch district in the western part of the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, an Indian army officer said.

"The firing lasted for a very brief period. We don't know who fired the rounds. We didn't retaliate and maintained complete restraint," he added.

There was no immediate comment from Pakistan.

Earlier this week India accused Pakistan of violating a nearly 14-month-old ceasefire along the Line of Control in Kashmir, saying 15 mortar bombs were fired on Tuesday from Pakistani territory into another area in Poonch district, wounding a girl.

    Pakistan denied the charge.

India says Pakistan arms and trains Muslim militants crossing into Indian Kashmir to join an insurgency against Indian rule. Pakistan denies that but says it offers the people of Muslim-majority Kashmir diplomatic support in what it calls their freedom struggle.

The peace process suffered a setback earlier this month when talks to resolve a row over India's plans to build a dam in Kashmir broke down.
