    Stepping up exchanges across Straits
    By Jiang Zhuqing (China Daily)

Substantial efforts to promote cross-Straits exchanges and other steps to make life easier and more convenient for Taiwan compatriots working and living on the mainland should be made, a political adviser urged yesterday.

At the same time, the up-coming anti-secession law will have a positive, far-reaching impact on the growth of cross-Strait relations, strengthen opposition to "Taiwan independence" secessionist activities and safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits region, Wu Guozhen, told a plenary meeting the of 10th National Committee of CPPCC.

With the rapid economic development of the mainland, more Taiwan compatriots have come here to do business, working and learning in recent years, the CPPCC member said. "At the same time, problems and conflicts caused by the ambiguity of existing laws and regulations have increased correspondingly."

On behalf of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, Wu suggested progress is needed in these areas to enable Taiwan compatriots to "have a sense of belonging and being the master."

Supervision and checks should be increased to guarantee the implementation of the law protecting Taiwan merchants investing on the mainland, said Taiwan-born Wu, also a professor of physics at Tsinghua University.

To strengthen people-to-people exchanges from the two sides, special efforts are needed to attract more young people from Taiwan to study and work on the mainland, he said.
