Two blasts in Baghdad, gunfire heard
    (Agencies)
    Updated: 2005-04-14 15:01

Two blasts shook Baghdad near the heavily fortified Green Zone on Thursday, and shooting broke out immediately afterwards.

Smoke could be seen rising from the southwest part of Baghdad, near an entrance to the Zone, the headquarters of the Iraqi government and site of the U.S. embassy.

U.S. military spokesmen had no immediate information about the blasts, which took place about 10 a.m. (0600 GMT).

Ambulances could be heard going to the scene, which security staff said was in the vicinity of Baghdad university.

The Green Zone, an area of central Baghdad, on the banks of the Tigris river, is frequently attacked by insurgents firing rockets and mortars.

Car bombs have also been detonated at entrances to the heavily protected complex.
