Expatriate drivers to take Chinese tests
    (Shenzhen Daily)
    Updated: 2005-04-23 13:55

Expatriate learner drivers would take the same strict tests as Chinese learners from Sept. 1, Pan Qiang, an official of the municipal vehicle control office, said Thursday.

A driving skill test program, to be adopted throughout Shenzhen from Sept. 1, requires learners to pass six of nine items added to the present on-road test section.

Learners from other countries and the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions will also be given the test that includes driving around obstacles, driving along a one-way bridge, making right-angle turns, doing hill-starts, changing gear as required within 100 meters, driving on uneven and zigzagged roads and passing narrow passageways at a limited speed.

Expatriate learners could go to any of the driver training schools for lessons if they had lived in the city for more than a year with residency permit issued by the local public security bureau, said Pan.

Those who have obtained driving licenses in their countries and regions can apply for a Chinese driving license.

They need to provide their ID card, passport, a translated and notarized version of the driving license and residency permit when submitting an application at the driver administration section of the municipal vehicle control office, located at the Xili training and examination center in Nanshan District.

If the documents are accepted, the expatriates need to sit a written exam testing their knowledge of the traffic rules, for which the examinees can bring interpreters. If they pass the test, usually set on the 15th and 30th of the month, they can get the license within the month.

The office sees about a dozen of expatriates applying for driving licenses each month. They are mainly from Singapore, South Korea, Japan and China’s Hong Kong and Macao SARs, said Pan.
