Track-laying has been completed on 852 kilometers, or 75 percent of the 1,142-kilometer Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the first railway linking Tibet with the rest of China, according to the headquarters for constructing the project.

This year will see track laid at an elevation of 5,070 meters, the highest railway spot in the world, said La Youyu, a deputy director with the construction headquarters, Tuesday.

The railway will be finished by the end of this year and put into trial operation by July 1, 2006.

The full length of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, between Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, and Lhasa, the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, will be 2,040 kilometers.

Construction of the first phase of the railway, between Xining and Golmud, Qinghai, began in 1958 and ended in 1984. In 2001, the 1,142-kilometer-long second phase, from Golmud to Lhasa, was launched.

Track-laying has proceeded smoothly on the railway, which crawls on the snow-covered Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, often called the "roof of the world." Railway builders have made efforts to protect the environment and deal with other problems such as frozen earth and the prevention of highland disorder and epidemics to build the railway.
