    Lien calls for cross-Straits cooperation

Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) Party Chairman Lien Chan Wednesday urged all the KMT members to take the responsibility to boost cross-straits cooperation and economic and trade communication.

Lien made the remarks at a meeting of KMT Central Standing Committee in Taipei Wednesday following his historic visit to the Chinese mainland.

The Taiwanese media said that KMT Secretary-General Lin Feng-cheng reported Lien's visit to the mainland at the meeting, noting that the eight-day visit was helpful to dismiss old thoughts on cross-straits relations.

Lin said he hoped all circles in Taiwan will see relations with the mainland "with brand-new thoughts."

Lien said he expressed the hope, during his visit, that a "mutually beneficial win-win relationship" should be established across the straits.

He said he also expressed the hope for the KMT and the Communist Party of China (CPC) jointly to build a communication platform between the two parties and to open the forums on peace, economy, trade and culture, so as to ameliorate the cross-straits relations.

Lien said Taiwan must "face the situation in a pragmatic manner rather than stick to some impractical standpoints."

Lien also said he was happy to receive the pair of pandas that the mainland offered Taiwan as a gift, and he hoped that the pair will breed.

KMT Vice Chairmen Wang Jin-pyng, Ma Ying-jeou and Wu Poh-hsiung also made speeches at the meeting, agreeing that the KMT should further develop communication with CPC on the basis of the "1992 consensus" concerning the One-China principle and the already-established communication platform.

Wang said Taiwanese agricultural products will soon be allowed to enter the mainland market, and the KMT will "actively and pragmatically" boost it.

Ma said Taipei will establish a working team for the pandas and will build a panda hall by the end of this year.
