New staff find guns at London embassy abandoned by Saddam

    Updated: 2005-06-08 17:37

New Iraqi staff found guns when they reopened the embassy that diplomats from Saddam Hussein's regime abandoned just before the US-led invasion in 2003.

"The current Iraqi authorities informed police of the discovery of a number of firearms found within their premises in southwest London," a police spokesman said Wednesday.

No arrests have been made as the investigation continue.

The Press Association news agency said a number of firearms, believed to include submachine guns, handguns and listening devices, were found in safes at the currently unused building.

The discovery was made as new Iraqi ambassador Salah al-Shaikhly opened up the site for the first time since the embassy was abandoned by staff just before the war started in 2003.

"They co-operated fully with UK authorities, including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and a number of firearms were subsequently recovered," said a police spokesman.
