Real Madrid signs two Uruguay internationals

Real Madrid signed Uruguay internationals Pablo Garcia and Carlos Diogo, its first acquisitions since the end of the season.

Madrid signed midfielder Garcia from Spanish rival Osasuna and rightback Diogo from Argentina's River Plate, but gave no details of the transfer fees.

Garcia agreed to a four-year contract, with Diogo signing for one year more, Madrid said Friday.

"It's the dream of any soccer player, the highest you can reach," Garcia told news agency Efe.

Garcia, 28, is a fierce tackler who received 19 yellow cards in last season's Spanish league, more than any other player.

Garcia was sent off two weeks ago at the end of the Spanish Cup final, his last game for Osasuna, for a wild challenge on Real Betis winger Joaquin Sanchez. Osasuna lost 2-1.

The midfielder joined Osasuna in 2002 from Venezia. He has also played for AC Milan, Atletico Madrid's reserve team, and Uruguay's Penarol.

"Pablo Garcia is a specialist who will help us a lot with his ability, experience and tactical know-how," Madrid vice president Emilio Butragueno told Madrid's Web site.

Diogo, 21, played for River Plate on Wednesday when it was eliminated from the Libertadores Cup semifinals by Sao Paulo.

While he usually plays as rightback for Uruguay, he can play in a variety of positions. He previously played for Uruguay's Club Atletico River Plate and Penarol.

"Diogo is a young player with a marvelous future. He's very strong physically and technically," Butragueno added.

Madrid is also attempting to sign Brazil forward Robinho from Santos, although the deal has stalled because the clubs haven't agreed on a transfer fee.

"We have to wait and hope that it turns out the way we want. Although he is very young, his contribution to the team could be spectacular," Butragueno said.
