    China welcomes DPRK agreement
    By Qin Jize (China Daily)
    Updated: 2005-07-11 05:46

Kim Gye-gwan, the DPRK's vice-foreign minister, informed US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill that Pyongyang is prepared to return to the talks during the week beginning July 25.

The decision came just after Rice touched down in Beijing for a 20-hour visit, the first leg of a four-nation Asian tour, widely believed to be devoted primarily to the nuclear issue.

Rice reaffirmed that the US recognizes DPRK as a sovereign state and has no intention of invading or attacking it. She said she is looking forward to making progress in the Six-Party Talks, an important step in dealing with the DPRK nuclear programme and in establishing a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

However, Rice also cautioned that the resumption of the talks is only a first step and practical progress is the main target.

Rice held talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing. She concluded her visit by meeting State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan, who is expected to pay a three-day visit to the DPRK starting from tomorrow.

Local observers said Tang's visit is in preparation for the opening of the next round the fourth of the Six-Party Talks.
