    'Unity brings prosperity, rejuvenation'
    By Cao Desheng (China Daily)

Taiwan's New Party leader Yok Mu-ming yesterday called on Chinese people across the Taiwan Straits to devote more efforts to promoting national reunification.

"Reunification has not yet been achieved, all Chinese compatriots should spare no effort to realize it," said Yok while delivering a speech at Renmin University in Beijing.

Heading a 30-member delegation, Yok is expected to end his eight-day journey to the mainland today, during which he took part in activities commemorating the 60th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945).

"Wartime history tells us that only unity can bring prosperity and rejuvenation to a nation," Yok said.

He urged the mainland and Taiwan to work together to safeguard the Diaoyu Islands and the right to explore gas fields in the East China Sea.

He rejected Taiwan's secessionist leader Lee Teng-hui's claims that the Diaoyu Islands belong to Japan, and expressed firm opposition to those who still have a Japanese imperialist mentality and look down upon their Chinese compatriots, accusing Lee of being such a representative.
