Thousands flee after tidal waves hit Indonesia's Aceh

Thousands of people fled to high ground Saturday after tidal waves struck coastal villages in Indonesia's tsunami-battered Aceh province, destroying dozens of homes but causing no injuries, officials said.

The waves, three meters (yards) high, smashed into three villages in southern Aceh at around 6 a.m., said Sahnun Ahmad, a seismologist in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.

"It was not a tsunami," he said. "It was triggered by full moon tides and strong winds."

At least 30 homes built along the shoreline were either damaged or washed away, but no one was hurt, Ahmad said.

Thousands of people from the villages of Tapak Tuan, Sawang and Samadua fled in panic to high ground, state-run Antara news agency reported.

The December 26 earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people across Asia hit Aceh the hardest _ claiming 75 percent of the toll. Hundreds of aftershocks continue to rattle residents six months later.
