Todt frustrated but refuses to give up titles

HOCKENHEIM, Germany: Ferrari sporting director Jean Todt admitted on Monday that he was frustrated by the team's continuing lack of competitiveness but denied that they had given up on retaining at least one of their world titles.

Reigning world champion Michael Schumacher conceded that his hopes of regaining the crown he had won seven times were over after Fernando Alonso's win at the German Grand Prix on Sunday left him 40 points ahead of the German.

Ferrari are 39 points behind Renault in the constructor's championship but the gap widened with Schumacher managing fifth and team-mate Rubens Barrichello crossing the line tenth.

Todt stopped short of echoing Schumacher's thoughts but did say that their hopes hinged on how Ferrari would fare at the next race in Hungary.

"Drivers': very, very difficult," said the Frenchman.

"You have a clear guide, and particularly when you see the first 12 races. So mathematically we can (win it) but it seems very far from being easy.

"Manufacturers? It all depends if and when we are able to react to the present situation. If we would be able to react at the next race, then it's possible. If not, each race makes it more and more difficult."
