Islamic Jihad declares halt in rocket fire

The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad on Wednesday denied involvement in a rocket attack that inadvertently killed a Palestinian child, but said it would halt all rocket fire ahead of the upcoming Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, reported AP.

Tuesday night's attack killed a 3-year-old boy and wounding nine other people, including four children of a former Palestinian Cabinet minister.

Islamic Jihad issued a statement calling the attack an "unfortunate incident" and said it had issued orders three days ago to stop firing rockets "to give the chance for a quiet Zionist departure from our beloved Gaza."

Militants fired the rocket at a large gathering of Jewish settlers in southern Israel who were protesting the withdrawal, which is set to begin in two weeks.

There was no claim of responsibility, and it was unclear whether other militant groups, including Hamas, would halt the rocket fire.

Militants have fired hundreds of homemade rockets toward southern Israel in recent years, but the rudimentary weapons are inaccurate and frequently land in Palestinian areas.
