    Taiwanese doubt shooting probe result

The Taiwan-based Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has agreed to establish another investigation committee into the "March 19 shooting incident."

Taiwan's local media reported on Wednesday that the ruling DPP's party group in the "Legislative Yuan" had agreed to allow two other major political parties, the Chinese Kuomintang Party (KMT) and the People First Party (PFP) to participate in the new investigation, CCTV.com reported yesterday.

Only 19 per cent of respondents to a Taiwan newspaper's opinion toll said they trusted the conclusion reached by Taiwanese investigators in a probe into last year's election-eve shooting.

According to investigators, the "March 19 shooting incident" was not staged by the campaigners, incumbent leaders Chen Shui-bian and Lu Hsiu-lien.

About 40 per cent of respondents said they did not accept the decision, 41 per cent remained silent.

More than 90 per cent of respondents from the pan-blue alliance said they could not accept the investigation's conclusions.

Before the polls, the KMT and PFP described the conclusion as "very absurd and hasty" and vowed to keep working to unearth the truth.

Parliament members of the two parties also said they could not accept the probe's hasty conclusion and would push for the formation of a second special investigation committee.

The opposition protested the election outcome, claiming the shooting was a conspiracy.
