Cause of Jilin colliery flooding identified

Specialists have so far initially detected the cause of the flooding that occurred at the Fengguang Coal Mine in Shulan City of northeast China's Jilin Province last Friday.

Rescuers are working hard to search the 16 miners still trapped beneath the shaft.

According to the local coal mine bureau, water of nearby Lianhua Pond flooded into the shaft through several discarded small shafts, causing the accident. Heavy rainfall in recent months also contributed to the flooding.

Yin Yuke with the Jilin Provincial Coal Industry Bureau said onSunday that there are now three leaks beneath the pond, which covers a total area of 120,000 square meters, Yin said, adding that the amount of water running into the No. 5 shaft through the three leaks is estimated at 300,000 cubic meters.

Rescuers are trying their best to block up the leaks and pump out water from the No. 5 shaft. It will take another two or three days to stop up the leaks, a specialist said.

The flooding took place at around 4 p.m. on Friday when 152 miners were working below the ground in the No. 5 shaft. A total of 136 miners escaped from the scene afterwards, but 16 others remained trapped underground.

Following the flooding, Jilin Province has ordered 70 adjacent coal mines with risk of being flooded to suspend production for safety check-ups.

According to a circular jointed issued by three provincial coalmine work safety watchdogs, any coal mine that does not meet the requirement for safe production will not be allowed to resume production.
