Global talent tops non-NBA US team at worlds qualifer

COLORADO SPRINGS, United States (AFP) - Five players from European clubs and three from Asian teams were named to the US roster of non-National Basketball Association talent that seeks a World Championships berth.

The 12-man US roster for the Tournament of the Americas was announced by USA Basketball here Sunday. The tournament starts Wednesday in the Dominican Republic and runs through September 4.

The top four teams other than Argentina, an automatic qualifier after winning Athens Olympic gold last year, will advance to the 2006 FIBA World Championships in Japan.

Because an expanded world champion field includes teams to be chosen by FIBA, US officials no longer need to send NBA squads to ensure they will not miss out on a place at the global championship.

Considering the disappointing bronze-medal US showing with a team of mainly young NBA talent at Athens, the Americans could have done worse than the minor-leaguers lineup being sent to Santo Domingo.

Center Adam Chubb, forward Aaron McGhee and guard Alex Scales played in South Korea last season.

Center Kris Lang and guard Charlie Bell played in Spain while guard Marque Perry played at Greece's Olympiakos and guard Lynn Greer played at Moscow Dynamo.

Guard Tyus Edney, at 32 the eldest man on the team by five years, played for Roma in Italy last season.
