East China's Zhejiang braces against Typhoon Khanun
    (Xinhua)
    Updated: 2005-09-10 15:43

The meteorological observatory in east China's Zhejiang Province warned all relevant departments against Typhoon Khanun which may hit the province over the weekend, bringing strong winds and torrential rains.

With a radius of 200 kilometers, Khanun is moving northwestwardly at 22 kilometers per hour, packing center winds of 144 kilometers per hour.

In a warning issued at 7 p.m. on Friday, the observatory said Khanun, the 15th typhoon of the year, might first land or brush past northern offshore areas of Taiwan between Saturday night and early Sunday, and then probably land the Chinese mainland from the coast between Taizhou of Zhejiang and Fuzhou of the neighboring Fujian Province Sunday afternoon or Sunday night.

Because of the impact of the typhoon, there will be strong winds ranging from moderate gale to hurricane in the sea waters and the coastal areas in northern and central Zhejiang starting from Saturday night through to the forthcoming Monday, plus heavy or torrential rains in eastern Zhejiang, with rainstorms in Wenzhou, Lishui, Taizhou and Ningbo.

The provincial flood and drought control headquarters on Friday night convened a provincial teleconference urging different localities to prepare for arrival of typhoon Khanun and disclose a detailed evacuation plan concerning dangerous areas in Wenzhou, Taizhou and Lishui.

The headquarters also issued a circular calling for monitoring the movement of Khanun carefully, a intensified management of reservoirs, and urging sea-fairing ships to return to safe harbors and mountainous areas to prevent mudslides.
