Zheng Jie halts in second round at China Open

BEIJING, September 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Zheng Jie, whose current world rank is 50th, couldn't go a step further in the second round at the China Open of WTA tournament, falling to Poland's Marta Domachowska 6-3, 6-1, here on Thursday.

Zheng, the Chinese wildcard, easily dropped her first game in the first set within two minutes but managed to level the score 1-1. Trailing at 3-2, Zheng equalized at 3-3 but lost in three straight games.

Depressed Zheng, the first Chinese woman to reach a Grand Slam fourth round at Roland Carros in 2004, was broken in the first game in the second set, and came to trail at 3-0. The WTA tour titlist at Hobart in 2005 only won one game back and gave in 6-1.

Thus Zheng couldn't go a step further as Peng Shuai and Sun Tiantian, who stunned 9th ranked Serena Williams, made to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

"My opponent did a good job in both speed and power, and played down my performance," the 22-year-old said, "and my service lacks spin, which made no threat to my rival."

When asked to compare with her last year's performance, Zheng, who was ousted in the first round at the inaugural China Open in 2004, said that she improved both technically and psychologically, especially on her service.

Despite Peng and Sun's advancement at the WTA second-tier tournament, Zheng didn't list Chinese women tennis among the top group in the world. "Our capability to handle the changes on the tennis court is not so strong as foreign players. When we are limited, we tend to lose in straight games and even sets." Zheng said.
