Tiger Woods seeks repeat win at Japan's richest event

"He's the yardstick of how good we can get. He does things with his golf stick that we cannot do," Campbell said.

"I've beaten him -- that gives me an extra edge."

Also hoping to depose Woods are American Jim Furyk, two-time winner here Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie.

The veteran Montgomerie also noted the high level of competition, but said Woods was the most integral member of the field.

"The American's participation brings added kudos to this tournament," he said.

"It does give us extra focus, him being in the field."

Played on the par-70 Phoenix Country Club on the southern island of Kyushu, the tournament is the Japan Tour's richest with 200 million yen ($1.7 million) in prize money, helping it draw the strongest international field of the season.

The leading Japanese players competing in the field include Shingo Katayama, Keiichiro Fukabori and 2002 winner Kaname Yokoo.
