On the wagon 和off the wagon這對短語已被人們使用了近一百年，用來形容喝酒的人戒酒的過程。Wagon在英語中是卡車、貨車的意思，那么又為什么和戒酒聯系到一起了呢？
首先我們來解釋一下這兩個短語的具體含義。喝酒的人往往在狂飲后出于宗教、家庭或其他原因發誓要戒酒。在這段戒酒的日子里，我們說他on the wagon；如果這個酒鬼過了段時間，又開始喝酒，而且酗酒成性，我們說他fall off the wagon。
"On the wagon" 來源于短語on the water wagon 和on the water cart。19世紀后期，人們用馬車拉水(horse-drawn water cart)，但并不是用來運輸居民的飲用水，而是在干燥炎熱的夏季，像現在的灑水車一樣，噴灑塵土飛揚的道路。 這段時期正是全國大規模開展禁酒運動的時期，婦女門還有部分男士都積極參加了禁酒運動。他們極力支持關閉啤酒廠和沙龍，希望通過這一運動喚醒他們酗酒的丈夫和父親，根除國內酗酒這一不良風氣。
