Al Roker實際上是在作當地及附近地區的天氣預報，neck of the woods是指附近地區，附近一帶。
大家都知道，許多沒有生命的物體，如工具，瓶子，骨頭，大炮和小提琴都有neck 。在自然界中，neck不僅僅指"脖子"，還可以用來指一條長的水體，冰或樹林。由此類推，neck of the woods說的應該是一片長條狀的森林。
Neck of the woods是個具有悠久歷史的美語中特有的短語，它于美國早期拓荒者們生活的地帶有著密切的聯系。
19世紀上半頁，人們把位于邊遠森林地區的拓荒者的聚居地稱做neck of the woods。1839年的《泰晤士報》上第一次出現過這樣的用法。在《美國風：新大陸英語》（Americanisms: The English of the New World）一書中，De Vere這樣描寫一位美國的拓荒者: "He will. . .find his neighborhood designated as a neck of the woods, that being the name applied to any settlement made in the well-wooded parts of the South-west especially"。
Neck of the woods在今天的英語中仍然非常活潑，而且不單單指邊遠地區的聚居地。它現在可以用來指任何一社區或地區（any neighborhood, area or region）。有時候它被簡化成neck，例如: "what are you doing in this neck?" （你在這一帶干什么？）
