古英語(yǔ)中，hey這個(gè)詞已經(jīng)被用于表達(dá)高興、愉快、驚訝或者困惑等感情，或是用來(lái)引起別人注意，就像在下面的句子中起到的作用: “Hey, wait a minute!” “Hey, that's a great idea!”
Hey 的另一種功能是“強(qiáng)調(diào)，引起聽(tīng)者對(duì)自己下面所說(shuō)的話的注意”。1986年，語(yǔ)言學(xué)家艾里克-漢普就發(fā)現(xiàn)hey的這種新用法在語(yǔ)言的使用頻率越來(lái)越高。特別是漢普將hey的這種用法解釋為表達(dá)“贊同，并且暗示下面的話是真的或者顯而易見(jiàn)的”。 Hey的這個(gè)意思就同“clearly，surely；of course”比較接近?！都~約時(shí)報(bào)》（1986年版）中有這樣一個(gè)例子"Pennzoil has been arguing that, hey, they are reasonable people." 另一個(gè)例子是迪尤爾蘇格蘭威士忌在1994年所作的一則電視廣告，廣告語(yǔ)說(shuō) "It's not easy at first, but hey, neither are a lot of things."
在非正式的場(chǎng)合hey經(jīng)常用來(lái)代替hi或者h(yuǎn)ello來(lái)打招呼。比如說(shuō)， “Hey, Tim, how are you?” “ Hey, what's happening?”
