“Hat trick”這個詞最初出現于19世紀70年代英國廣為流行的板球比賽中（在殖民時代，英國殖民地的球隊經常在國際比賽中大勝英國本土的球隊）。在板球比賽中，“a hat trick”的意思就是一名投球手連續投出三個好球而將對方三名球員淘汰出局，這可是不是一件容易的事情。
這名取得這樣成績的投球手通常會得到一頂新帽子作為獎品，這就是“hat trick”這個詞的來歷。
因為“hat trick”是連擊三球的意思，在20世紀初這個詞組的意思很快就推廣到其他的體育比賽中，指代“連中三元”的意思。在賽馬項目中，它的意思是“the winning of three races by a single jockey in one day”。在足球和曲棍球比賽中，它的意思是“the scoring of three goals by a single player in one game”。
與此同時，“hat trick”這個詞組也用在棒球比賽中，通常指的是“hitting for the cycle”：the hitting of a single, double, triple, and home run by a single player in one game, an exceptionally rare achievement.
Hat trick現在已經不僅僅用于體育比賽中，其它任何“連續三次的成功”（any remarkable accomplishment, usually of three successive successes or achievements）， 例如某公司連續三年成功的經營或者某位指揮家取得連續三個晚上音樂會舉辦的成功都可以稱“hat trick”。
