“Pot”的意思是鍋?zhàn)?luck是運(yùn)氣。而Potluck作為一個(gè)詞,指的是美國(guó)一種經(jīng)常舉行的聚會(huì)形式。也就是在某一個(gè)人,或幾個(gè)人的提議下舉行一個(gè)午餐會(huì)或晚餐會(huì),但是參加聚會(huì)的每個(gè)人都要帶一個(gè)菜或者帶一種飯后甜食。主人除了為聚會(huì)提供場(chǎng)地外,也只要準(zhǔn)備一個(gè)菜,或買(mǎi)一些飲料就行了。這就叫作:“Potluck lunch” or “potluck supper”
Potluck還有另外一個(gè)意思,那就是:有什么就要什么。用在吃的方面就成了:有什么吃什么的意思。比如,一個(gè)人碰到了好幾年沒(méi)見(jiàn)面的老朋友,他說(shuō):
“Say, Charley, if you don’t have plans for tonight, why don’t you come out to our house and take potluck with us. Helen won’t have time to cook anything special, but she can put an extra plate on the table for you.”
