劃船的時候，故意把船搖晃，可能會引起很嚴重的后果。Rock the boat從字面上來看，意思就是“把船搖晃”，rock在這里不是指石頭，而是作動詞用，解釋為“搖晃”，例如：The earthquake rocked the buildings violently. （地震使建筑物搖晃得很厲害。）
船只搖晃得很厲害，甚至有傾覆的危險，所以，rock the boat這個成語往往引申為“興風作浪、使事情不能順利進行、破壞良好的現狀、搗亂”的意思，帶有貶義。
例如：
We've been doing it this way for years; don't rock the boat by trying to introduce new methods.
我們多年來一直是這么做的，別打算引進什么新方法來搗亂。
The other boys said that Henry was rocking the boat by wanting to let girls into their club.
其他男孩都說亨利想讓女孩進他們的俱樂部破壞了現有的良好現狀。
