Beijing's spectacular job hosting the Paralympics puts pressure on London to match the feat in 2012, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Philip Craven said yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference at the Sha Tin equestrian venue in Hong Kong, Craven said that the number of spectators in the Beijing Paralympics will likely break Sydney's record of 1.2 million.

Craven said the local spectators support not only China's athletes, but also those from other countries. The atmosphere in the Bird's Nest when Zhang Zhen won the gold medal in the 5,000m-T11 caught Craven's attention.

"The roof lifted off the stadium. It was amazing," he said.

Prior to the games, the IPC had spent years coordinating with the Beijing Olympic Committee and received China training about five years ago.

The staff teaching the China course had once told Craven that his perception of the nation would not be changed. However, the trainer decided to take back his comment after visiting Beijing.

Craven said there were concerns of problems facing China prior to the game, but he found that the Chinese people were capable of learning and accepting new ideas quickly. The openness of the volunteers impressed him.

"I am able to communicate with those who speak good English. They are very open about discussion about all sorts of things in the world," he said. "These games could have transformed the world opinion and knowledge of China."

The facilities provided in the Paralympics also ensured accessibility to the disabled, Craven said.

He said the other co-host city, Qingdao, also played an important role in the Paralympics.

When asked whether the Beijing Paralympics is the most exceptional, he replied that he will reserve his judgment until the closing ceremony.

Craven, who is also a board member of the organizing committee of the London Paralympics, said London will feel pressure.

"As a board member, I am confident that we can put up a wonderful game. However, when you get such an incredible response in China to the Olympics and Paralympics, I would think that it is quite natural to put a little bit of pressure on the next organizing committee. They really have to perform," he said.

Speaking at the cocktail reception for Craven, Chief Executive Donald Tsang said the determination, courage and willpower of the Paralympic riders have been an inspiration to the community.

"We believe the Paralympic Games can inspire (young people) to learn, grow and achieve," he said. "Their participation will help them build their teamwork and communication skills, as well as hone their sense of fair play and integrity."
