    The Application of Proton and Heavy Ion Technology by Private Medical Institutions -- A case study on International Medical and Health-care Center (Suzhou) in Jiangsu Province(Special Issue, No.28, 2019)

    Abstract: Proton and heavy ion accelerator radiotherapy technology is one of the worlds’ leading cancer physiotherapy technologies and private medical and health-care institutions have played an important part in China’s medical service system. In recent years, China’s private medical service institutions have been actively involved in the practice of the application of proton and heavy ion technology along with those government-run medical institutions. By pushing ahead with the integration of technology with brand, scientific research with education, therapy with health-care as well as market performance with public welfare, some results have been achieved, through pilot practice and innovation, in terms of enhanced international cooperation in medical practice, professional medical personnel training, sustainable development of medical institutions and the fulfillment of social responsibilities of private enterprises. But it needs to be noted that private medical institutions are facing some problems, including the relatively high market threshold for proton and heavy ion radiotherapy equipment import, the lack of professional medical personnel, and limited financing channels. Work needs to be done to further relax the control over the import of proton and heavy radiotherapy equipment, strengthen the intelligent underpinning for private medical institutions and shore up the mechanism for the sustainable development of private medical institutions.
