Meicun Linsheng Instruments Workshop, an erhu production factory in Wuxi New District, Jiangsu, was recently recognized as one of the Top 30 Manufacturers of Traditional Chinese Instruments in 2014 by the China Nationalities Orchestra Society and the Chinese Folk Music magazine.
It was the second time that the Wuxi manufacturer wins the title since its first selection in 2013. Its annual sales revenue currently amounts to 50 million yuan ($8.1 million).
In addition, Wan Qixing, a local erhu artisan, was recognized as one of the 2014 Top 10 Craftsmen of Traditional Chinese Instruments.
Erhu, one of the most representative traditional music instruments in the regions south of the Yangtze River, has a profound connection with Wuxi. Hua Yanjun and Liu Tianhua, the most famous Chinese erhu musicians were both from the city.
Early in 1965, Meicun opened its first instruments workshop to make erhu. So far, there are more than 10 erhu workshops in Meicun and over 20 percent of erhu in the country are made here.
In order to promote local tourism and culture, Meicun has also planned to open an erhu cultural and creative park, which will introduce and promote the erhu through exhibitions, performances and training.
