    Home fans witness golden treble

    A dozen world records and two Paralympic records fell Wednesday at the Bird's Nest, where home fans were thrilled to see Chinese athletes win three of the 17 gold medals on offer.

    China's Zhu Pengkai claimed the men's javelin F11/12 with a new world record, followed by Branimir Budetic of Croatia and Miroslaw Pych from Poland.

    "My third throw was 63.07m and that was my best throw ever," said Zhu.

    "I performed much better than expected. I felt the gold was in my hand when I made it."

    Zhang Lixin and Wu Qing added two more gold for the hosts in the men's 400m T54 and women's javelin F35-38, both managing to set new world records.

    Canadian veteran Dean Bergeron concluded his last Paralympic Games with a gold medal in the men's 200m T52. Beat Bosch from Switzerland and Peth Rungsri from Thailand finished second and third respectively.

    "I'm really very happy about my performance," said the 39-year-old world record holder.

    "This is my last Paralympic Games. I'm relaxed and I'm also relieved."

    Abraham Cheruiyot Tarbei from Kenya broke the world record in the men's 1,500m T46 to win gold, while Abderrahman Ait Khamouch from Spain and Samir Nouioua from Algeria finished second and third respectively.

    Tunisians Farhat Chida and Abbes Saidi finished one-two in the men's 400m T38 following season best performances. Andriy Onufriyenko of Ukraine came third.

    In other field events, Darko Kralj from Croatia set a new world record in men's shot put F42, Ukraine's Tetyana Yakybchuk won the women's discus F32-34/51-53 and France's Arnaud Assoumani snared gold in the men's long jump F46.

    All of them set new world records.

    Athletics will continue today with eight gold medals up for grabs.
