In the spring of 1938, the Chinese and Japanese armies had the most drastic street fighting in Tai’erzhuang. After over one month of bloody battle, the Chinese army achieved the world-famous Tai’erzhuang Triumph. Li Zongren, as the chief commander of the 5th war zone, was the commander of Tai’erzhuang Battle.

On August 17, journalists of dzwww.com made a phone call to Li Lun, the nephew of Li Zongren, who now lives in New York, and listen to his narration of the details about how the Death Squads took the task in danger and fought against enemies in Tai’erzhuang Battle.

Before leaving, the the Death Squads members were not interested in the reward of 100 thousand silver dollars. They said to fight against the enemy was to fight for their own country. No one knew if he could come back or not. They had their own secret signal. They rolled up their left sleeves and cut them off before leaving. In the enemy’s camp, once they saw somebody with “double sleeves” or “naked”, they would shoot firstly and kill them with bayonet or broadsword in case they came closer. Or they called each other “Laoxiang”, which in Chinese means fellow villager. Both methods were very easy to distinguish themselves and the enemies in dark. When the forlorn hope members came back, they said it was easy to find the enemies because once they rushed into the Japanese camp when the Japanese soldiers were sleeping, the enemies would be a scene of chaos and crying loudly, which made them obvious objects. After the Triumph of Tai’erzhuang, twice of the reward was given to the relatives of the dead and their memorial ceremony was held by the whole Death Squads members in public.
