    Yuan Zai, the first cub born to a pair of pandas given as a goodwill gift to Taiwan by the Chinese mainland, is expected to bring NT$500 million yuan in economic revenue for the island, Xinhua News Agency reported.

    Yuan Zai is scheduled to make her first public appearance on Monday at Taipei Zoo. During her media reception on Saturday, she was active for 20 minutes, playing with her mother and climbing trees.

    Police attack

    Police in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province, pledged to investigate a case in which a policeman was accused of attacking a woman.

    In a widely circulated online video, a policeman in uniform pushes a woman to the ground and attacks her. In the two-minute video, the woman cries, "The policeman is beating me!"

    The Chengdu Public Security Bureau announced on Sunday that it will further probe the case, according to the official micro blog of Sichuan provincial government.

    News of death

    Bai Zhongren, president of State-owned China Railway Group Limited, died Saturday afternoon, the company said in a statement on Sunday.

    The statement gave no further details about the senior manager's death, but media reports said that Bai committed suicide due to the company's debts.

    A 26-year-old woman in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, gained popularity among netizens with her marathon running.

    The woman, nicknamed "Mao Dou" (bean), who has finished seven marathons, attracted more than 10,000 followers on her micro blog. She said she plans to complete 100 marathons and stay in shape, the Strait Herald reported.

    Express punishment

    A college in East China's Jiangsu province vowed to punish students who cheat in their exams and express deliver the punishment statements to the students' homes.

    "The punishment will be issued immediately and mailed freely," said a banner hanging in front of a building at the Jiangsu Jianzhu Institute. An official from the publicity department at the school said the move is aimed at enhancing discipline in exams through using buzzwords from taobao.com, a popular online-shopping website.

    Chinese buyers eye US

    Chinese investors have spent $12.3 billion in one year, from March 2012 to March 2013, buying houses in the United States, Beijing News reported.

    Chinese buyers have become the second-largest group of foreign customers of US property, and the largest is Canadian buyers, the report said.

    Baby found

    A 1-year-old baby girl in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region managed to survive two days in the wild after getting separated from her father.

    The baby girl got lost on Jan 1 while at a wedding banquet with her father. Her parents and policemen found her two days later playing in the bushes, Nanguo Morning News reported.

    Official caught

    An official in South China's Hainan province who was accused of illegal fund-raising has been caught overseas and transferred to Chinese police, People's Daily reported.

    Shen Guilin, vice-chairman of Hainan provincial federation of industry and commerce, allegedly raised 1 billion yuan in funds and fled with the money in December. He was caught in a Southeast Asian country, the report said.
