    WASHINGTON -- The United States presidential candidates will take their first test in the long-term and fierce competition for candidacy as Iowa caucuses kicked off on Thursday, followed by a state-by-state primaries and caucuses throughout the first half of the year.

    The following is the calendar of the 2008 state primaries and caucuses announced by the US National Association of Secretaries of State:

    January

    Jan. 3: Iowa

    Jan. 5: Wyoming (Republican)

    Jan. 8: New Hampshire

    Jan. 15: Michigan

    Jan. 19: Nevada, South Carolina (R)

    Jan. 26: South Carolina (Democratic)

    Jan. 29: Florida

    February

    Feb. 1: Maine (R)

    Feb. 5 (Super Tuesday): Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho (D), Illinois, Kansas (D), Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico (D),New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah

    Feb. 9: Louisiana, Kansas (R)

    Feb. 10: Maine (D)

    Feb. 12: District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia

    Feb. 19: Hawaii (D), Washington, Wisconsin

    Note: Hawaii Republicans will select delegates during a week-long period in February

    March 4: Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont

    March 8: Wyoming (D)

    Apr. 22: Pennsylvania

    May 6: Indiana, North Carolina

    August

    Aug. 25-28: Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, where the party's presidential candidate is decided and announced.

    September

    Sept. 1-4: Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, where the party's presidential candidate is decided and announced.

    Note: Among the states, those where caucuses are held include Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho (D), Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico (D), North Dakota, and Wyoming. The rest will run primaries.
