The United Nations issued a report today in Beijing, Promoting Development, Saving the Planet, which argued that addressing climate change will require major investments in low-emission, high-growth strategies for developing countries.

The report comes about three months before the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference this December.

Ms. Viktoria Sekitoleko, a representative from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, spoke at the press conference, and called for China to take the lead in the climate change fight.

"China should shoulder more responsibility in battling the climate change" she said: "When I went to Mongolia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to discuss the climate change issues, they always asked 'What is China doing now?' and they definitely look to and look at China's effort."

Zou Ji, a professor at the School of Environment and Natural Resources at Remin University, was invited to be the keynote speaker at the press conference. He spoke about the importance of the report, and argued that technology sharing was a key part in responding to climate change.

"In my opinion, China will definitely go on the efforts to build a cleaner environment even without the launching of this report, just for the benefits of our own people. But we do need the advanced technology more accessible to quicken the speed." Zou said.

Zou also said China shouldn't make any commitment on climate change issues unilaterally right now.

"Combating climate change [requires] cooperation and balancing between the developed countries and developing countries."
