Editor's note: The 2021 Legislative Council election which took place on Dec 19 is the first under Hong Kong's revamped electoral system. Yvonne Wong Lai-fong, general manager of Qianhai International Liaison Services Ltd and vice-chairman of Y. Elites Association, shared her views on the election.

    1. What do you think of the arrangements at the polling stations this year?

Arrangements on the polling day were efficient. Many staff members were deployed to work at different polling stations across the city. The polling station I went to was rather small, and could not serve many voters at once, but the voting process was fast.

    2. The expanded legislature includes new sectors and new constituencies, such as representatives from the grassroots and national level associations, as well as the Election Committee constituency. How will these changes in the legislature benefit Hong Kong, its governance and the people?

This is a healthy change and trend, because candidates with more diversified backgrounds are able to compete on the same platform. With the improved electoral system, we can have lawmakers who really work for Hong Kong's community and social affairs instead of just focusing on political strife.

    3. This is the first LegCo election under the city's revamped electoral system. What's your take on the significance of this election?

I think we'll be witness to Hong Kong's changes. The city's atmosphere will be more focused on our community rather than politically driven.

    4. What are your expectations for those who won the race, for the next LegCo, and for Hong Kong as a whole?

I hope they make more efforts to reconcile political divides and focus on social and economic development. For legislators, if they wish to work for people, they should choose a constructive path instead of reckless opposition.

Let's think, plan and take action more proactively.
