Gateway to the famous Russian Riviera, Sochi is a renowned Black Sea resort known for its vibrant boardwalk and stunning sunsets.

During the summer months, the coastline comes alive with pulsating beats from nightclubs that last until dawn. In winter, this former Winter Olympics host city attracts ski enthusiasts from all corners of the globe.

Located along the Black Sea coast in Southern Russia, Sochi stands as the country's largest resort city, offering a familiar yet captivating experience to visitors worldwide. Hosting prestigious events such as the Winter Olympic Games, Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix, and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Sochi has established itself as a prominent destination on the global stage.

Originally named in 1896, Sochi's title may have originated from the local term "sshatche", meaning "place by the sea", reflecting its historical significance as a trading hub.

Sochi is known in Russia for its sunny skies and balmy temperatures, and former leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin had a vacation home near this Black Sea coastal city that was also known as the "All-Union health resort" of the Soviet Union.

Stalin's personal study, featuring a wax statue of himself, is currently accessible to the public. Throughout Stalin's governance, the coastline was adorned with grand neoclassic structures, such as the lavish Rodina and Ordzhonikidze sanitariums.

Today, Sochi welcomes visitors year-round, offering not only beach holidays but also a plethora of active leisure pursuits. From ski resorts to ice arenas, the city boasts a range of athletic facilities built for the Olympic Games.

The former Olympic Park now is called Sochi Park, a Western-style amusement park, and the Sochi Autodrom, a street circuit that hosted Formula 1 races.

Additionally, the Fisht Olympic Stadium has been transformed into an open-air football venue for international tournaments like the FIFA Confederations Cup and FIFA World Cup.

Prepare to immerse yourself in the charm and excitement of Sochi, where history, nature and modern amenities converge to create an unforgettable experience for all who visit.

    Summer time

During the summer season, Sochi offers a warm Black Sea with a subtropical climate, although its beaches are characterized by rocky and gray shores, adorned with artificial trees and sunbathing loungers on the modest stretch of sand.

While not the most picturesque or pristine beach destination, the lively seaside boardwalk, known as Naberezhnaya, comes alive with vibrant nightlife in summer, featuring nightclubs playing energetic music till dawn.

In June, July, and August, Sochi's cultural scene thrives with open-air summer theater performances and live music events at venues like the Waterfront Festival Concert Hall.

For those seeking more secluded beach spots, private beaches can be found south of the city extending all the way to Adler, accessible by taking a train to Krasnaya Polyana and disembarking at Matsesta, Khosta, or Izvestiya station.

Another delightful way to experience the sea is by embarking on a sightseeing cruise from Sochi's historic sea terminal, offering stunning views of the snow-capped mountains towering behind the city and the chance to spot playful dolphins in the water.

Additionally, Sochi boasts excellent air quality, attributed in part to its vast forested areas covering nearly 202,343 hectares, with a significant portion located in the city center.

Explore Sochi's enchanting parks, including a botanical garden and arboretum showcasing rare and exotic species of tropical flora, along with picturesque coastal promenades and trails for leisurely strolls.

    Mountain view

Sochi's natural beauty is enhanced by its vast array of natural attractions, including mineral springs found within the nearby Caucasian State Nature Biosphere Reserve. The Agura and Orekhovskaya waterfalls stand out as stunning features in this landscape.

In addition to the waterfalls, Sochi's mountainous terrain harbors mysterious caves that bear traces of early human migration toward Neanderthal-dominated Europe more than 35,000 years ago. The city also boasts a trout farm, a magnificent dolphinarium and an aqua theater, adding to its appeal as a nature lover's paradise.

The majestic Greater Caucasus Mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop to Sochi, offering visitors the opportunity to elevate their experience by taking a high-speed train from Sochi to Krasnaya Polyana.

Among the notable destinations in this region is Roza Khutor, renowned for hosting the alpine skiing events during the 2014 Winter Olympics. This world-class resort features nearly 80 kilometers of ski trails, including those at Rosa Peak, the highest point in the region at 2,320 meters.

Once the snow melts, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy Gorki Gorod, which offers 7 kilometers of mountain bike tracks and four hiking trails meandering through forests, fields, and waterfalls.

For those seeking adventure, there is an exciting ropes obstacle course at 1,460 meters known as Adventure Park, as well as a year-round indoor water park with a glass-domed roof providing stunning mountain views.

For a more leisurely experience, both Rosa Khutor and Gorky Gorod offer scenic gondola rides to their highest points, allowing guests to admire the picturesque landscape from viewing platforms or indulge in top-notch dining at the mountain's summit.

    Urban dining

After a day in the sun or snow, dining in Sochi offers a delightful and distinctive experience, influenced by the city's southern location and its close proximity to the sea.

Take a leisurely stroll along the Naberezhnaya to explore the charming open-air cafes and seaside restaurants.

Situated just a few kilometers from the Georgian border, Sochi is infused with tantalizing scents of grilled meat and khmeli suneli, a traditional Georgian spice mix carried by the sea breezes.

Enjoy the best shashlik (kebab) at Chyo? Kharcho! on the Naberezhnaya, or savor its signature kharcho (lamb stew) and other Georgian delicacies.

The spacious terrace offers a welcoming ambiance with views of the boardwalk and beach, perfect for unwinding with a beer while enjoying some people-watching.

For seafood enthusiasts, a visit to Dok is a must. This upscale spot overlooking the harbor features a raw bar offering oysters from the Far East, the White Sea and local Black Sea waters. Another top dining choice is the restaurant lounge at sea level in the Sanremo Hotel, providing indoor and outdoor seating, a tempting seafood menu, and a chic atmosphere.

To experience a taste of Europe in Sochi, make a stop at Frapp near the train station. Indulge in sweet or savory waffles, fresh-squeezed juice, Viennese coffee, or simply mingle with Sochi's hipsters before departing on your train journey.

For a rich cultural experience, adventurous travelers may opt for a stay at a seaside sanitarium. Alternatively, the Sanremo offers a cozy atmosphere and an excellent beach-front location.

The Sochi train station underwent renovations for the Olympics and now boasts a splendid appearance. Sochi's airport is located in Adler, 25 km to the south, with numerous flights to Moscow.
