Man detained over death of 2 Japanese

A Chinese man has been detained on suspicion of killing two Japanese men over business disputes, police in Dalian, Liaoning province, said on Tuesday. Preliminary investigations showed that the victims, both Japanese nationals who were visiting the city, were identified as former business partners of the suspect, a 42-year-old Chinese citizen surnamed Yuan. The killings were triggered by disputes over business cooperation, according to the Dalian Public Security Bureau. The bureau said it received a report on May 23 about a criminal case involving two deaths in the Pulandian district of Dalian. On May 24, the bureau apprehended Yuan, who had previously resided in Japan for a long time. Yuan's full name was not disclosed. He is currently in criminal detention. Local authorities recently informed the victims' families about the case, and relevant departments assisted with the cremation of the remains of the two victims and other arrangements. The families returned to Japan on Sunday, the bureau said.

Beijing hospital first to open BCI clinical ward

The Beijing Tiantan Hospital, under Capital Medical University, officially established a Brain-Computer Interface Clinical and Translational Ward on Friday, marking a milestone in the application of BCI technology in clinical settings in China. BCI is a communication system that converts the "ideas" in the brain into instructions. Collaborating with other partners, the hospital will focus on BCI research, clinical trials and the promotion of related technological achievements with the help of this newly established ward. "This is the first ward in China to apply BCI technology in a clinical setting," said Cao Yong, director of the ward and deputy director of the Neurosurgery Center at the hospital. He added that the ward is currently conducting clinical trials with the Beinao-1 BCI device, the world's first high-throughput wireless fully implanted chip.

Yunnan passes plateau lake protection law

Yunnan province's top legislature has enacted a regulation to protect the inflow rivers of the province's key plateau lakes, a move to further safeguard their water quality and ecological security. The regulation, passed at the 17th session of the 14th Standing Committee of the Yunnan Provincial People's Congress, will take effect on Sept 1. The plateau lakes mentioned in the regulation are the Dianchi, Erhai, Fuxian, Chenghai, Lugu, Qilu, Yilong, Xingyun and Yangzonghai lakes across the cities and prefectures of Kunming, Yuxi, Honghe, Dali and Lijiang. According to local authorities, the nine plateau lakes have a combined basin area of 8,110 square kilometers and support over 7 million people. They serve as the region's vital ecological and life-sustaining systems. The regulation stipulates that the provincial government will oversee and coordinate the protection and management of inflow rivers.

Capybara returns from two-month adventure

A capybara named Doubao escaped from the Zhuyuwan scenic area zoo in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, in early April, evading capture for nearly two months. Doubao, whose name means "bean bag," was finally caught in a trap cage on early Tuesday, after a string of reward increases — from zoo tickets to a lifetime family pass — sparked jokes about the zoo's thriftiness. Doubao returned home plumper and shinier, now reunited with its family and enjoying the zoo's care once more.
