Railway development in numbers

? By the end of last year, China's high-speed trains spanned about 48,000 kilometers across the country. It has the largest high-speed rail network in the world, accounting for more than 70 percent of railways covered by such trains across the globe.
? China's high-speed trains saw 22.9 billion passenger trips by the end of 2024. They currently handle 76 percent of the nation's passenger trips and see 69 percent turnover in its passenger traffic.
? In 2024, China's high-speed railway operated more than 8,600 trains per day, handling over 8.8 million passenger trips. On peak days, it ran over 10,000 trains and handled more than 16 million passenger trips.
? China has worked hard to integrate its high-speed rail network with the internet and has built the largest real-time ticket booking system in the world. Known as 12306, the app and website combined have over 700 million members. The system is designed to sell over 20 million tickets per day, with most ever sold in one day reaching 26 million.
? Online reservations have become the norm, accounting for around 85 percent of all ticket sales, with a peak of 90 percent on a single day.
