Internet firms pursue the language of success

By Huang Ying (China Daily) Updated: 2015-11-18 07:49

Learning English online is developing into a rapidly expanding business and fueling the rise of Internet players such as 51Talk.

Recognized as one of the largest online English educational websites, 51Talk was rolled out in 2011 and has experienced rapid growth.

More than 4,500 overseas teachers are now employed by the company, which outstrips its rivals, with registered users, or customers, topping the 2.5 million mark.

Last year, it received a third round of financing worth $55 million from investors, including renowned venture capital firm Sequoia Capital.

"The investment will be used to improve the learning experience of our online students, and to expand and enhance the quality of our teaching resources," Huang Jiajia, founder and CEO of 51Talk, said. Providing one-on-one English tuition at affordable prices is one of 51Talk's crucial advantages in a highly-competitive sector.

The cost for a 25-minute online course ranges from 15 yuan ($2.35) to 30 yuan and is nearly a quarter of the fees charged by traditional bricks-and-mortar language schools.

About 90 percent of the overseas teachers at 51Talk are from the Philippines, while the rest come from the United States and European countries. Half the teaching staff are full-time with the remainder employed on a part-time basis.

This mix has helped 51Talk retain its edge in the online market place, Huang stressed.

"For us, it is easier to manage the full-time employees, but the part-time foreign teachers excel in their areas of expertise," he said. "This means they are more knowledgeable in teaching English when it comes to specific fields." The success of online English schools such as 51Talk is hardly surprising.

Data released by iResearch Consulting Group, a market research company, showed that last year online language courses generated 19.38 billion yuan, an increase of 23.7 percent compared to 2013.

That figure is expected to grow by more than 20 percent annually and the industry is likely to be worth 35.46 billion yuan by 2017.

English language courses dominate the online sector with a 44.7 percent market share.

Next is Chinese on 28.7 percent, followed by Japanese and Korean on 16.6 percent, according to a market survey conducted by iResearch.

So far, hujiang.com, the online platform of New Oriental Education & Technology Group, VIPABC and, of course, 51Talk are the leading online English language schools.
