The phrase when it comes to the crunch is used when talking about a situation where you have to make a crucial decision or give an important performance.

"I'm just gutted because this was a chance to win some silverware."

To be gutted is a slang term which means to be very disappointed and annoyed about something.

"We lose as a team and win as a team. We're going to hold our heads up high and take this on the chin," added Cahill.

By saying "we're going to hold our heads up high", he means Everton have to stay positive and confident.

The phrase to take something on the chin means to accept an uncomfortable defeat in a mature way, without worrying too much about it.
