    Xi Jinping was elected president of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and chairman of the PRC Central Military Commission (CMC) on Thursday. Xi was formerly the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

    The first session of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) began the closing meeting of its annual session Tuesday. Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the closing meeting held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
