SCO members explore green energy cooperation potential in Tianjin

During the 2025 SCO Inter-Civilizational Dialogue in Tianjin on Wednesday, officials and experts from SCO member countries discussed the immense cooperation potential in clean energy, green technologies, sustainable finance, and more.

Chao Qingchen, director of the National Climate Center, highlighted that by last year, China had exceeded its target by reaching a combined installed capacity of 1.25 billion kilowatts in wind and solar power, more than six years ahead of the commitment made at the Climate Ambition Summit to achieve over 1.2 billion kilowatts by 2030.

Chao suggested that enterprises and research institutions among member countries should participate in more green technology innovation cooperation and proposed establishing a green technology research and development alliance to develop green technologies tailored to each region's needs.

"SCO countries are highly complementary in terms of clean energy resources, technological advantages, and development stages, which presents enormous potential and broad prospects for deepening cooperation in green energy," said Ma Shiqian, director of the Distribution (Utilization) Technology Department at the Electric Power Research Institute of State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company.

He highlighted China's practical efforts in promoting green transformation, such as the establishment of 334,000 charging piles in Tianjin, including the Charging Piles into Communities project, which serves as a model for fostering green urban transportation.

Aleksandr Dey, senior marketing manager of the Central Asian branch of China Energy International Group, highlighted the company's role as a reliable partner in building a green and ecological Uzbekistan.

Projects including solar power plants, comprehensive energy projects, electrochemical energy storage clusters, and green cement production in Samarkand have optimized local energy structures and facilitated the modernization of green energy.

Aleksandr said that China Energy will continue to uphold the principles of green development, promote a transformation towards high-tech, green, and humanistic cooperation structures, and contribute to energy improvement and bilateral relationship development in Uzbekistan.

The recent approval of the Initiative of SCO Member States on Strengthening Cooperation for Sustainable Development during the 6th meeting of SCO member countries' environmental ministers on July 3 further advances international collaboration in sustainable development.
