The Bayer Group had another very good year in China, in 2011, with sales reaching nearly EUR 3 billion.

Johannes M. Dietsch, the president of the Bayer Greater China Group, told a press conference in Beijing on April 19, that, “We expect our business in this market to continue experiencing strong growth in the coming years. And we’re aiming to double our greater China sales to around EUR 6 billion by 2015, by aligning our core business with China’s crucial needs.”

The press conference also marked the official launch of the Bayer Ten-Point Plan.

Bayer’s roots in China go back as far as 1882 when it provided textile dyes for the China market. So, this year is the 130th anniversary of Bayer in China, which has grown to include three subgroups: Bayer HealthCare, Bayer CropScience and Bayer MaterialScience.

China is now Bayer’s third largest market globally and its number one market in the Asia-Pacific region, whereas, only 20 years ago, Asia accounted for about 10 percent of its global sales, or just over EUR 2 billion. A decade ago, this had grown to about 15 percent, and, by 2011, to almost 20 percent. The greater China market alone has grown to account for 8 percent of the company’s total sales worldwide.

Dietsch went on to explain that, “At Bayer, we believe in ‘Science for A Better Life’ and are in a position to help the country address its major challenges through our products and innovations.”

Bayer’s China Ten-Point Plan demonstrates Bayer’s understanding of sustainable development in China and shows just how its products and innovations can help the country face the basic challenges in its ambitious project.

Bayer MaterialScience is providing solutions in light weight mobility, and in sustainable building and infrastructure. Last May, it broke ground on the first Bayer EcoCommercial project in China, in Qingdao, Shandong province. This will be Bayer’s first zero-emissions building in China.

Bayer will work closely with local partners to find innovative solutions and to cultivate local talent. It has already established global R&D centers across China, including the Bayer HealthCare global R&D center in Beijing, which opened in 2009, and the Bayer Polymer Research and Development Center in Shanghai, which is currently being enlarged to cover a full range of R&D expertise and customer-focused solutions.
