U.S. fast food giant McDonald's Corp said on Tuesday it would give its Chinese employees their first across-the-board pay rise.
From next month, McDonald's will increase workers' pay to levels 12 to 56 percent above local minimum wages, McDonald's China spokesman George Gu said.
McDonald's became embroiled in a public controversy in April, when Chinese newspapers reported it was paying some part-timers far below local minimums -- for example, 4 yuan (52 cents) an hour in the big southern city of Guangzhou, or just over half the city's minimum.
The All-China Federation of Trade Unions called on McDonald's to adjust its pay and let its workers unionize.
"The wage issue partly helped us accelerate salary adjustments in China," Gu said. "But the main purpose is to let our local employees share the prosperity of McDonald's business."
The company will also introduce more incentive and training programs for its 50,000 staff in China, and aims to have all workers unionize by the end of this year, compared with 80 percent now, he added.
Chinese consumer price inflation hit a 33-month high of 4.4 percent in June.
The pay rise will not hurt the profitability of McDonald's in China and the company has no near-term plans to increase its food prices, Gu said.
McDonald's has over 800 restaurants in the Chinese mainland and plans to open 100 more every year.

麥當(dāng)勞公司中國(guó)發(fā)言人George Gu說(shuō)，從下個(gè)月起，麥當(dāng)勞將全面上調(diào)員工工資，上調(diào)后員工的工資水平將高出當(dāng)?shù)刈畹凸べY標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的12%至56%。
今年四月，麥當(dāng)勞中國(guó)公司被曝其兼職員工的工資水平遠(yuǎn)低于當(dāng)?shù)刈畹凸べY標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，因而遭到公眾質(zhì)疑。比如，廣州麥當(dāng)勞兼職員工的工資為每小時(shí)4元，僅為廣州市最低工資標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的一半多一點(diǎn)。
中華全國(guó)總工會(huì)要求麥當(dāng)勞公司調(diào)整其公司水平，并建議麥當(dāng)勞員工成立工會(huì)。
George Gu說(shuō)：“工資事件是調(diào)薪速度加快的其中一個(gè)原因。但主要目的是讓員工們分享麥當(dāng)勞的經(jīng)營(yíng)成果?！?br/>
他說(shuō)，麥當(dāng)勞公司還將為中國(guó)內(nèi)地的5萬(wàn)名員工制定更多的薪資激勵(lì)和培訓(xùn)計(jì)劃，并計(jì)劃在今年年底讓所有員工加入工會(huì)，目前加入工會(huì)的員工比例為80％。
6月，我國(guó)的消費(fèi)者物價(jià)指數(shù)上漲 4.4％，達(dá)到33個(gè)月以來(lái)的最高水平。
George Gu說(shuō)，員工加薪不會(huì)影響麥當(dāng)勞在中國(guó)的盈利，近期麥當(dāng)勞公司也沒(méi)有漲價(jià)的打算。
麥當(dāng)勞公司在中國(guó)內(nèi)地共有800多家餐廳，并計(jì)劃每年增開(kāi)100家餐廳。
