Updated: 2009-03-05 16:08 China should work out national industrial standards for methanol-powered vehicles, said Li Shufu, chairman of Geely Auto, a major homegrown carmaker, on the sidelines of the annual sessions of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Li, a CPPCC member, proposed that the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Standardization Administration work out related policy and specifications to promote the use of methanol-powered vehicles.
"It will be an ideal way for a green future in the auto industry because methanol engine-equipped cars are much cleaner, and with lower R&D and production costs, compared with other types of new energy solutions," said Li. Zhejiang-based Geely, one of China's biggest private-owned carmakers, unveiled its methanol-powered Haifeng last year.
